What BeerLog Is
BeerLog is a personal beer journal app that lets you log beers you've tried, scan barcodes, and share activity with friends.
Data We Collect
- Account information: name, email address, and password (hashed)
- Logged beer data: beer name, brewery, style, rating, notes, and date
- Photos: images you upload when logging a beer
- Friend connections: who you are connected with on the platform
- Device camera: used only for barcode scanning and photos, with your permission
How We Use Your Data
Your data is used solely to provide the BeerLog service to you. We use it to:
- Display your beer history and statistics
- Show your logged beers to your friends (and theirs to you), plus any logs you choose to make public to other signed-in users
- Look up beers by barcode
Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with any third parties. BeerLog is private by default: your profile and the beers you log are visible only to the friends you approve. You can choose to make your profile, or an individual log, public — in which case it becomes visible to other signed-in BeerLog users, including people you don't know. Public content never reaches the open web and is never indexed by search engines, and you can switch any log, or your whole profile, back to private at any time. What's allowed in public content, and how to report anything that isn't, is covered in our community guidelines. We don't use third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking services. See Diagnostic Data below for the limited operational data we record on our own server.
Diagnostic Data
To diagnose bugs and decide when to retire old app versions, we record per device: a randomly-generated device identifier, the platform (iOS, Android, or web), the app version, the operating system version, and the time of your most recent activity. This data is stored only on our own server, never shared with third parties, and deleted when you delete your account.
Data Storage & Security
Your data is stored in a PostgreSQL database on a privately operated server. Passwords are hashed and never stored in plain text. All communication between the app and the server is encrypted via HTTPS. Photos are stored on the server and are not accessible to the public.
Data Retention & Deletion
Your data is retained for as long as your account exists. You can delete your account and all associated data at any time — see our account deletion page for instructions.
